Gold trading, explained properly

Gold is a highly liquid market that trades around the clock, and XAU/USD is the price of one troy ounce of gold in US dollars. This hub teaches you how the instrument actually works before you risk a rand: contract size, leverage and margin, position sizing to a fixed risk, and what the trade really costs. Read it in order once, then use the sections as reference.

FAQ

Common questions

Where should a complete beginner start with gold trading?

Start with the mechanics before the market view: what a lot is, how pips are counted on gold, and how margin works. On this desk, one standard lot is 100 oz and one pip is 0.01. Then practise on a demo account until the steps feel routine, and only then consider live capital.

Do I need a lot of money to start trading gold?

You need enough to survive normal volatility, not a set minimum. Leverage lets you control 100 oz with a fraction of the value, but that magnifies losses as well as gains. At 1:200, a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin, which is a deposit requirement, not a measure of how much risk you should take.

What is the difference between a pip and a point on XAU/USD?

On gold, one pip is 0.01, and many platforms also show fractional points beyond that. A move from 4275.00 to 4275.10 is ten pips. Knowing the pip size matters because your risk in rand is pip movement multiplied by lot size and the USD/ZAR rate. Our pip value calculator does that conversion for you.

How do I work out a safe position size for gold?

Position size comes from your risk budget, not from what the platform allows. Decide the rand amount you are willing to lose, convert it to dollars, then divide by the dollar loss per pip on your intended lot size. Our position size calculator runs that arithmetic so the stop distance and lot size stay consistent.

Is a demo account enough before I trade gold with real money?

A demo account teaches platform mechanics and order handling, but it cannot teach you how you react to losing real money. Use it to make entries, stops and exits automatic, then start live with a small position size. The gap between demo and live is emotional, not technical, and it is the part beginners underestimate.
